And polite conversation gets left at the door.
The Social Ish Starting Society, Inc. is a Newark-based nonprofit rooted in community care, creative resistance, and social justice advocacy — igniting conversations for social change.
Our Mission
We believe change begins where community is centered — in the conversations we dare to have, the art we dare to make, and the people we dare to show up for. The Social Ish Starting Society exists to bridge the gap between advocacy and action.
"Where advocacy meets action and polite conversation gets left at the door."
What We Do
From the classroom to the community, our programs are designed to educate, empower, and ignite.
A weekly freeform creative writing series where participants respond to visual art with no rules, no pressure — just honest expression. Open to all skill levels. Each session features a curated word bank to inspire, never restrict.
Ongoing SeriesA literacy and literary leadership program centering youth of color in the joy and power of reading, writing, and storytelling. Building the next generation of authors, advocates, and critical thinkers.
Coming SoonTech literacy and digital empowerment for communities who've been left behind by the digital divide. Because access to technology is a social justice issue.
Coming SoonLanguage is power. This program explores the roots, history, and cultural context of words — building vocabulary, critical thinking, and a deeper relationship with the language we use to describe our world.
Coming SoonAn ongoing hygiene donation drive assembling travel-size self-care kits for Newark's unhoused community. Kits are collected and delivered to Bethany Baptist Church for distribution.
Active DriveA community wellness initiative reminding Newark's most vulnerable residents that they are seen, valued, and worthy of care — one hygiene care package at a time.
Active InitiativeCommunity Care in Action
We believe community care is not optional — it's a practice. Here's how we're meeting Newark where it is.
We collect travel-size hygiene essentials — soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotion, lip balm, hand sanitizer, feminine hygiene products, wipes, and more — and assemble them into care kits for Newark's unhoused community. Every item donated is a reminder that dignity is not a luxury.
More than a hygiene pack — a message. The U R SEEN initiative is about radical acknowledgment: that every person experiencing homelessness deserves to be seen and treated with dignity. Your donation is part of that message.
We need volunteers to help with kit sorting, community outreach, drop-off coordination, social media support, and more. No experience required — just a heart for your community and a willingness to show up.
Founder Danica S. Miller serves as Newark's AAMBC Inc. Ambassador under Tamika Newhouse — connecting Newark's literary community to Black Writers Weekend and amplifying the voices of local authors and storytellers.
Creative Writing Series
A weekly freeform creative writing series where participants respond to visual art — with zero rules and zero pressure. Just you, the page, and whatever truth needs to come out. Every session features a rotating word bank to spark imagination.
The One Rule: There are no rules.
See & Scribe is a judgment-free creative space. Participants write, respond, explore — in any form, any genre, any voice. Poetry, prose, stream of consciousness, single words — all of it belongs here.
Artwork is projected or shared. A word bank is offered. Then the page becomes yours.
